This book will not be easy to read. It is not a cozy, friendly little book meant to cheer you up and brighten your day. It is, however, a starkly true story of what happened to a little girl born in Texas in 1960. Brinda Carey's first 22 years were an unimaginable hell - unimaginable, that is, to those of you who haven't had your own version of that hell. Sexual abuse and manipulation by a monstrous father and a descent into the emotional wasteland of promiscuity are just two of the hallmarks of that inferno. Can anyone ever recover from unrelenting sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of her parents? Brinda Carey did. Her message of hope and renewal is for every abuse survivor living alone with her pain - and it's for everyone who wishes to know about the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love and forgiveness.

I read this book a while back and just took it off the shelf again. Even on a second read, I would recommend it to anyone who has been abused or suspects someone they know is being abused. Brinda Carey does not cover the topic of incest from a grotesque angle. She tells in this memoir of how a survivor survives and goes on to seek healing from abuse. The book even contains checklists in the front and an addendum in the back of sayings, scriptures, and words that kept her going all those years. The most impressive thing to me when I read this is that she is now happily married with children and grandchildren. You can survive abuse. You can.

Don't Cry Daddy Here Brinda Carey 9780982802465 Books Reviews

This is one of the most heart breaking stories you will ever read. I cried several times reading this book. I admire this woman very much to be able to handle the situations like she did being so young. The deep love she felt for her children. How hard she fought at a young age to get out of the living situations and she tried to go to church and live right. Getting over incest is very hard at any age, but to deal with a very manipulative person at such a young age. The book is well written and it is very informative.
I admit it. I like happy endings. And if I had not known how this story ended, I would not have read it. The topic itself, child abuse and incest, is a subject which repulses me beyond description. But having met the author and having heard her story, I knew how the story ended, which made it easier for me to read this book. Nevertheless, this is not an easy book to read. The author pulls no punches in the candid description of her childhood. Brinda's father began sexually molesting her when she was only five years old and continued to do so into her young adulthood. He forced her into prostitution at the age of 14 and rented her out to friends and drinking buddies as party entertainment, and fathered two children by her, both of which died. As tragic as this story is, it has a redemptive theme. Brinda was fortunate enough to meet a young man who fell in love with her, and she also found strength in her new faith in God. These gave her strength to finally end the sexual and emotional victimization by her father, who in retaliation committed suicide, leaving a note behind blaming Brinda for his death. How Brinda could ever forgive her father for all that is beyond me, but the fact is she did. And that is what makes this a great story, in that Brinda has somehow been able to forgive her father and move on with her life. In the end, this story is about overcoming victimization and becoming a victor instead. Brinda and her husband Dennis have been together for thirty years and raised four children. Brinda worked her way through college, obtained a BS degree in criminal justice, and after retiring from a criminal justice career, she attempts to help those who are victims of sexual abuse, just like she was. Unlike many women who were sexually abused, Brinda has broken the cycle of abuse, which is a success story in itself. And I think her candid story could certainly inspire and help others. As sordid as this story is, it does have a happy ending.
Brinda Carey, a marvelously gifted author, powerfully unmasks incest in her family. She offers the reader her story with tasteful candor and stirs every emotion on the human barometer. The courage she demonstrates offers hope to every sexual victim who reads her painful account. The story carries the reader from the depth of incest to the mountain top of health.

Her voice shouts from the housetops. So many children are abused every day. Her story reveals the family curse and the behavioral signs to watch for. My hope is that every parent and teacher will read her story and become a soldier in the fight to end this abuse.
First, kudos to Brinda Carey for being so forthright and strong with a story that honestly had me in tears more than once. Sexual abuse is a really tough topic to tackle. Throw incest in there and it's a near impossible tale to spin to anything uplifting. Brinda managed to keep a clear, positive voice throughout while being informative and supportive of others in similar situations. I never once thought of her story as coming from someone seeking pity and I admire her strength. I would have liked to know more of her and Dennis's love story. Much of the tale talks about Brinda's children and early on, the dynamics of her family, but I didn't get a good sense of Dennis other than that he was a great man who stood by her even when she repeatedly broke off their engagements.

The beginning of the book comes across as a bit textual, citing symptoms of childhood abuse before launching into a tear-inspiring scene of Brinda at 16-years-old attending her son's funeral. The storytelling was clear, concise, and emotional, but with the good comes the bad. I think that there was surely a lot more to tell and I couldn't understand why, other than upbringing and obligation, Brinda kept letting her father participate in her life. I would have like to be in Brinda's mind more where this was concerned because I kept wanting to shout, "You cleaned his apartment and cooked his dinner?!?" I can't imagine anyone trying to forge a relationship with someone so abusive. Also, and this is personal preference, but I read the version and the book ended at around 45% before launching into resources and later, scripture. Big pet peeve. I think this book did so many things well and I come away feeling it's somewhat of a triumph story, in spite of some thought in the back of my mind wondering how many times Brinda would have gone back if her father was there to go back to.

All in all, it's a great read. Brief, descriptive, and disturbing. I'd recommend it to anyone with a strong constitution because as the blurb states, this is not a happy story, nor is it something I thing everyone could handle reading. Congratulations to Brinda for surviving, speaking out, and accepting something that would have so easily broken a weaker person. Best wishes for continued healing.
